Sophiatown Removals I 1955

The 12th February 1955 was the day the Sophiatown removals were due to start. The ANC had called on 5000 volunteers to mobilise around the slogan of Defiance, "Asi Hami" - "We Won't Move", and a stay away was planned for the first removal day. But on 10 February, two days ahead of schedule, eighty lorries and two thousand armed police moved into Sophiatown and began to evict people from the homes they had occupied and owned for generations.
